Essays on the Spartan Constitution, or Politeia, written by the ancients are available to any who can read and most definitely describe the legal mandate of homosexual relationships within their military ranks. Poorly written, delusional, objections by those who do not even care enough about the accuracy of their comments to spell check them don't change facts. I am heterosexual myself but also a fan of truth not phobic lies of those who dwell in the obscurity of delusional denial. Sorry for the effort you've put to rewriting history with no real sources. Homosexual Sparta is a very popular myth based on census. If you are lazy, not to read books or search for a good historical sources, even internet is full of reliable mentions about this so called truth of a spartan sexuality. Do your research an do not make empty guesswork based on popular opinions. In this specific topic the most reliable hustorical sources are Xenophon and Aristotles both stating very clearly that homosexuality in Sparta was no officialy practiced and what more, in case of pederastry it was even punishable by death. It all was very muxh diferent from practices of other greek states and that is the reason why Aristotles mention that with disdain.
Lycurgos refused homosexual relationa as impractical and distracting. On the bright side, Spartans endorsed women sexuality, that was almost completely dismissed in the rest of highly mysoginic greece. In oposition Spartans viewed good women sexuality as a sign of good marriage which was highlighted - again, in oposition to other Greek states (Aristotles was also critical to this matter).
Great military community and morale in Sparta came from training and indoctrination, not homosexual relation. Oh yea...btw.. that was Thebes. So you are actualy quite right, you just described completely diferent city-state.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07962308642089549961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7236889696587646160.post-57838289182587683082016-10-30T05:14:34.316-07:002016-10-30T05:14:34.316-07:00Great post!
Sparta has always fascinated me for it...Great post!
Sparta has always fascinated me for its unique society and culture, their linguistic peculiarity as "laconic", and also since "Helen of Troy" was actually a Spartan.

For some reason the Ancient Greek word "agape" or "agoge" comes to my mind with regard to the Spartan mess-hall, but I'm probably confusing it with something else.

Also, I'm wondering where did the helots stand in relation to the indigenous Spartans?
Did they rate a mention in Lycurgus' time as I seem to recall that the helots formed the basis of Sparta's economy, that a large part of Spartan military resources was required to prevent helot revolts and specific rituals were designed for adolescent Spartans to terrorise them and keep them in a state of constant fear.
It's been ages since I studied Ancient Greece but I'm also wondering if the Krypteia existed as a constitutional entity or as an ad hoc intelligence force?
These questions just sprang to mind and I apologise if they are beyond the scope of this fascinating article.
Thank you again for a fascinating read. The city was also in constant rivalry with the other major Greek cities ofAthens and Corinth and became involved in two protracted and hugely damaging conflicts, the Peloponnesian Wars of the mid- to late 5th century BCE and the Corinthian Wars of in the early 4th century BCE.I liked your blog, Take the time to visit the me and say that the change in design and meniu?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10405664942732517369noreply@blogger.com
